Frequently Asked Questions

What is the return on investment for implementing the Timber system? Print
Energy Management
That depends on a number of factors. If the facility already has a system in place that is doing some kind of control, the return on investment may not be that high. The real ROI in this case is the ability for Timber to consolidate all data to a central location, allowing for efficiency gains in both maintenance and responsiveness.

For those facilities that do not already have existing energy management equipment, the typical payback for the system is two years or less. We have had paybacks as small as nine months.

Why would a manufacturer implement such a system? Print
MES
Manufacturing optimization has become a key to growth and, in many cases, survivability. MES systems, when properly designed, help to reduce waste, improve machine and employee utilization and minimize raw material and product inventories. They also provide additional insight to strategic decision-makers with regard to upgrades, maintenance and capital improvements.

What are the typical uses for MES? Print
MES
The most typical uses that ASG has observed are for historical data collection, management of machine down time, and management of employee utilization. Of these, downtime awareness is probably the biggest reason for purchasing an MES system.

What can ASG do for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers? Print
Life Sciences
In the pharmaceutical manufacturing environment ASG can provide expertise in manufacturing control and e-signature (21 CFR 11) applications. We can also provide independent verification and validation (IV&V) where corporate policy or the FDA demands it.

What MES systems are you familiar with? Print
MES
ASG has considerable familiarity with the GE Fanuc Proficy product lines as well as Microsoft Dynamics (formerly Microsoft Navision). We have some familiarity with the Rockwell and Wonderware offerings as well.

What is the maximum amount of I/O points that Timber can support? Print
Energy Management
This number is limited only by memory and processor speed constraints. We think it is in the tens of thousands of I/O points.

How does the Child Talker differ from the Adult Talker? Print
Talker
The Child Talker is picture based; the Adult Talker is both picture and text based.

Does Timber have a web-based solution? Print
Energy Management
A web-based solution is currently under development.

Is Timber a distributed solution? Print
Energy Management
Timber itself is not a distributed solution. It resides on a PC that communicates with distributed systems. ASG has developed several of these distributed networks for our customer base.

Where do you perform the work? Print
Controls & SCADA
Our offices are located in the Buffalo, New York area, and we attempt to perform the bulk of the work here, close to home. However, most of us do travel to our clients' sites regularly to provide some level of development on site. We typically do that anyway at the beginning of the project (during requirements definition, high level design and any reviews) and at the end, when the integration task requires tight cooperation among all players.

Is the Talker covered by insurance? Print
Talker
Yes, currently the Talker is covered by Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Independent Health.
