Case Study: High Speed Chopper Lines Upgrade

Project Description:
Applied Sciences Group developed an upgrade to the existing MicroVAX-based high-speed chopper lines designed to cut large rolls of X-ray film into useable sheets. This upgrade supported a CAMAC-based Inspection System controlled by PDP-11 computers.

Approach:
Specifically, the general system architecture of the PDP-11 based Inspector menu structure, operator interface, and all applicable logic and high level control were duplicated in C on the MicroVAX using the PDP-11 FORTRAN source code as a basis. Operator screens were developed using DECForms and a set of AST based interface tasks similar to terminal tasks running at the Main, Unwind, and Packing Line Operator Consoles.

Results:
Inspection parameter files (discriminator settings...) are maintained for each film type by the MicroVAX, and are used by the Inspection interface software to generate commands to initiate CAMAC data transfers. At the end of each roll, parameters for the next roll are downloaded to the CAMAC. Changeover occurs without stopping the line, as the MicroVAX software tracks the end-of-roll splice and signals the CAMAC to change parameter sets as the splice crosses the inspection point. During processing, the MicroVAX receives raw inspection data from the CAMAC and tracks defect locations to within one millimeter. Any sheets containing defects are automatically diverted to a reject bin.
